Blackford County Promise: Community & Families Focus On Saving For Postsecondary Education

0

Launched in the Fall of 2016, the Blackford County Promise is off to a great start.  The program encourages our youngest students and their families to begin thinking about and planning for education/training after high school.

$43,000  of community support from individuals, non-profits, and local government – these funds are used to incentivize and match families college savings

70%  of our Kindergarten through 3rd grade students now have a CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings Account with funds in it

The core components of the Blackford County Promise are:

EDUCATIONAL SAVINGS
Families start a CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings Account. A student with dedicated funds for education knows his or her future is bright and people are saving for it! The funds can be used for 2-year college, 4-year university, or vocational/technical school.

“WALK INTO MY FUTURE”
Students experience a college campus through hands-on activities and meet college students to learn about possible future areas of study and careers.

ENGAGING CHAMPIONS
Champions encourage students to pursue their dreams or contribute to a student’s college savings account. Eligible students who raise $25 or more from their champions receive a community match!

COLLEGE & CAREER DISCOVERY
Students participate in college and career discovery in the classroom. Lessons include: “Who will I be when I grow up?” “Who are my champions who will support me?” and “What does college look like?”

COMMUNITY CULTURE
The Promise creates a culture of student success and builds hope for the future.
